We have arrived!

Hi all.

I just figured out that I get the internet in the apt. However, I can't plug in my computer to anything so it will probably die soon. Anyways, we are here. We got in at about 5:00 pm (korea time, 4:00 AM your time). My sweet brother met us at the airport and gave us some korean money and subway passes, and bought us coffee and made sure we got to the correct meet up place.
They told us that we will be going to orientation next week (Aug 31st - Sept 4th ?). They took us on a large bus to go meet our co-teachers at our school and then to our apartment. Our apt is AWESOME! Its really big...and it has an oven! I will send pictures of it later but just to give you an idea of how cool it is, there is a closet that takes up an entire wall in our bedroom, ceiling to floor. I know at least the girls can appreciate that. It has one bedroom, a big living room w/ kitchen a good sized bathroom and a big office. Plus we have a GREAT deck off the back (we are on the 4th floor). We are living in what is considered the international district in Iteawon (sp?), a province of Seoul. My school is in this same province and about a 10 - 15 minute walk from the house. Toby's school is in another district. He has to take the subway to school and we aren't sure how long it will take him to get there yet. He has to be at his school at 9:30 today for a meeting!! My teacher is picking me up at my house at 10:30 to go to school. I'm not sure what I will be doing today and neither is toby, but our co-teachers seemed really nice.

Pinch me now b/c I think I have died and gone to heaven.

I can't wait to go to the land of 'lil koreans!!!

Toby and I got accepted to go teach in Korea this August. We are both really excited...and a little bit nervous. However, after I watched this video I think a great teaching tool: BACKSTREET BOYS!

In 2007, the 'artist' Guillermo Vargas Habacuc, took a dog from the street, tied him to a rope in an art gallery and began starving him to death.

For several days, the 'artist' and the visitors of the exhibition watched, emotionless, the shameful 'masterpiece' based on the dog's agony, until eventually he died.

Does THIS sound like art to you?

But this is not all... the prestigious Visual Arts Biennial of Central America decided that the 'installation' WAS actually art, so Guillermo Vargas Habacuc has been invited to repeat his cruel action for the Biennial of 2008.

The name of the dog was Natividad, and I let him die of hunger in the sight of everyone, as if the death of a poor dog was a shameless media show in which nobody does anything but to applaud or to watch disturbed. So, if you know me at all then you know that I am madly and obsessively in love with Ben Folds. I love everything about him (except maybe that he has been divorced 3x and married 4 - but that means I still have a shot with him, right? I kid, I kid). If he produced an album where he just mumbled incoherently the whole time I would buy it and love it. Needless to say that I try to go see his concerts whenever he is around the southeast. I've even traveled as far as OH with Kate just to see this wonderful man.

Toby and I got an opportunity to see him at Berry College this past weekend. It was only open to students and alumni, but some friends of ours know a guy so we got tickets. The show, minus the lame audience, was awesome. Ben does a cover of a Dr. Dre (a rapper) song called "Bitches Ain't Shit." The song is gross and completely degrading to women - as is the majority of rap songs. Ben's cover, in my opinion, is meant to be completely ironic. The original version is a fast paced rap song while Ben's is slowed down and, if you didn't pay attention to the words, a really beautiful melody. He slows the song down and brings to focus what the song is actually saying and, in my opinion, poking fun at the rap industry. So, Berry college didn't want him to play the song because they obviously didn't get the irony that Ben is attempting. Supposedly he signed a contract with the college saying that if he played the song then he would forfeit $40,000 that he was to be paid. So, there we are rocking our faces off at his show and Ben starts talking about how he doesn't understand that anyone would take the next song he was about to play seriously and that it is meant to be ironic. Then he goes into his rendition of Dr. Dre's song. It was awesome. A big you-know-what to the man, if you will. Oh, how I do love Ben Folds.
